SINGAPORE: Migrant workers in the Kranji area are resorting to illegal lorry transportation for an affordable commute from Kranji MRT station to their dormitories due to limited bus services. While SMRT bus services 925 and 925M operate on this route, their schedules do not cater to the needs of these workers, particularly on Sundays and public holidays, as reported by The Straits Times.

The situation becomes especially dire on Sundays as SMRT bus service 925 does not run, and 925M terminates its service at 7.40pm. This leaves many workers with no viable public transportation option during the late hours of Sundays. Consequently, they are compelled to rely on lorry drivers who offer them a one-way ride to their dormitories for a fee of $2.

Migrant worker Gunasegran, who resides in the Westlite Kranji Way dormitory, explained his predicament, stating, “What choice do I have? I’m already tired, and I don’t want to walk in the dark for 4.5km to get to my dorm.

Another resident of the same dormitory, Mr Sivakumar, revealed that taking a taxi at night from the station could cost as much as $10, making the affordable lorry service the more attractive option. These lorries are capable of carrying up to 12 people each, and some larger ones can seat up to 22 passengers.

LTA responds to illegal lorry transportation

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) acknowledged the situation but highlighted the challenge of balancing the needs of various commuters. A spokesperson for LTA stated, “When planning bus services, LTA balances serving as many commuters as possible with factors such as ridership and financial prudency.” They added that the authority would continue to monitor travel patterns and make adjustments to bus service provision when viable.

Despite the risks and illegal nature of these lorry rides, checks conducted between July and September found an average of 10 lorries lined up outside Kranji MRT station, providing rides to migrant workers returning to their dorms on Sunday evenings. The lorry service starts only after 8 pm on Sundays and continues until about 11 pm.

Some lorry drivers initially denied offering transportation services but were later observed collecting money from passengers. This practice violates regulations, as it is an offence to use a goods vehicle to transport workers not employed by the owner or hirer of the vehicle. A first-time offender can face fines up to $1,000 or a jail term of up to three months, or both.

Transport operator’s perspective

Singapore Maxicab, a transport operator, noted that employers sometimes engage transportation companies to ferry workers from distant dormitories because purpose-built dorms are located in secluded areas. These dormitories have the capacity to accommodate around 256,000 workers.

Singapore Maxicab charges between $2,000 and $2,200 per month for a 13-seater minibus service, including pick-ups on workers’ days off. However, most employers opt for transportation only on workdays.

Mr Bernard Tay, Chairman of the Singapore Road Safety Council, emphasized the responsibility of employers for their workers’ welfare, not only on workdays but also on their days off. The Migrant Worker’s Centre (MWC) echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for a safer and more suitable transportation solution.

Mr Aman Aljunied, a former Singapore Safety Driving Centre instructor, raised the issue of safety hazards caused by these lorries, including illegal parking and congestion near the Kranji MRT station. He pointed out that the lorries pose a danger to migrant workers who have to navigate between moving buses to reach them.

SINGAPORE: Amid the stories of Singaporeans, many of whom are already of retirement age, who’ve lost large amounts of money to scammers, one recent refreshing story is of bank officers stepping in to prevent an elderly man from losing thousands, even when he was insisting on making a bank transfer.

DBS shared the story in a Facebook post on Sunday (Oct 8), beginning with the man, who was described to be in his 70s, repeatedly yelling in frustration the following question: “It’s my money, why can’t I make the transfer?!”

The incident with the elderly man getting upset with the staff occurred at the POSB branch in CompassOne mall in Sengkang around lunchtime, causing the usual noise to subside as other customers were surprised by the man’s outbursts. (DBS is POSB’s parent company.)

Bank officer Ms Rohani Hassan handled the man’s case, asking him questions about the S$3000 he wanted to transfer. Because the elderly man was hard of hearing, she wrote him a note that said, “I can’t make the transfer for you because I believe that you’re about to be scammed.”

In DBS’ post, the first part of which was written from Ms Rohani’s point of view, it was explained that because there have been so many scams, the staff asks routine questions when processing over-the-counter transfers. She wrote down some inquiries about the man’s intended payee.

He answered that the transfer was to be made to a courier company, so they could “release” a personal parcel meant for him. Alarm bells blared in my head. Now came the hardest part – informing the customer of a potential scam. I jotted multiple explanations of this, to no avail. I then requested for help from Deputy Service Manager (DSM) Siew Lay.”

Ms Siew’s part in the story came next, and she wrote that she went quickly to Ms Rohani and the man, having witnessed the fuss he raised. She then asked him for the payee’s account number to run more checks on it.

The Deputy Service Manager discovered that the payee’s account had been flagged for suspicious transactions. Moreover, Ms Siew pointed out that the account was also a personal one and not a business account, as the elderly man had mentioned.

Ms Rohani’s suspicions were right; the elderly man had been the target of a love scam. Ms Siew added that from what they have experienced in such cases, love scam victims tend to become emotionally involved, which is probably why he insisted on making the transaction despite the advice of Ms Rohani and Ms Siew.

SINGAPORE: In a world where the daily grind is often considered the norm, a growing number of young Singaporeans say unemployment can be fun and a time for self-discovery. This phenomenon, dubbed “funemployment,” is taking social media by storm, with young adults sharing their carefree lives as they break away from work.

Jonathan Chan, a 26-year-old former Olympic diver, is one of these funemployed individuals. Unlike his peers who rush to the office each morning, Chan revels in an extra few hours of sleep. He has been unemployed for five months and doesn’t hesitate to document his daily activities on social media. His Instagram video showcases a life of leisure, including high-intensity workouts, experimenting with spray paint, dining with friends, and evenings at the theatre, The Straits Times reports.

Chan’s video is just one of many emerging on TikTok and Instagram, collectively forming a growing collection of content under the hashtag #unemploymentlife. While this trend initially gained traction in the United States and the United Kingdom in 2020, it has also found a following in Singapore.

Career services experts point out that this rise in early career breaks among Generation Z demonstrates the changing work landscape. Young people today are less afraid to quit their jobs without a safety net because they have more opportunities to monetize their skills, often through gig work or content creation.

Vivek Iyyani, founder of Millennial Minds, commented, “Anything that can go on the Internet and be offered as a service can keep them afloat.” For instance, Zachary Tan’s online presence has earned him freelance marketing assignments, providing financial stability during his break.

Content creator Kirsten Ong left her job in June to explore a career as a full-time influencer. “Honestly, you can earn more as an influencer than in a normal job,” she revealed. During her funemployment period, her following on social media platforms grew significantly.

However, she eventually decided to return to working full-time in a marketing role after receiving an ‘irresistible job offer’.

While funemployment offers newfound freedom and opportunities, those who engage in it often face judgments from older generations and concerns about falling behind in their careers. Nevertheless, this emerging trend of ‘funemployment’ gives a shifting perspective on work among young Singaporeans who prioritize meaningful employment, mental well-being, and pursuing passions.

As Vivek Iyyani notes, “After all, the world has changed.”

As the world continues to evolve, funemployment may be more than just a temporary break; it could be what work means in the 21st century.

SINGAPORE: For some, turning 30 is “scary” probably because of this notion that you should have achieved something by then, while sometimes, maybe people are just afraid of getting old. A Redditor curious about the financial goals of those in their near thirties and past thirties describes the age of 30 as “quite a monumental one”.

Undertheflow, a male Redditor in his late twenties, commented that he’s working on his savings but emphasized that when he’s older, he ‘wants to look back and realise that he’s enjoyed life too.’ He shared his intention to prioritize savings while emphasizing the importance of enjoying life, including travel and spending time with friends. He noted, “Having all the money in the bank but not enjoying life is not for me man.”

10 Lessons When You Reach Life at 30

Start saving today: Pay all your debts, keep an emergency fund, open a savings account, and don’t invest in anything you don’t understand.Start taking care of your health now: Although we already know this, it’s still worth repeating: take charge of your health now.Learn how to say no: Stop spending time with people who don’t treat you properly. Build strong and healthy boundaries.Be good to people you care about: Make more time for important relationships. Spend time with your friends and family more.Focus on doing a few things well: Life in your 20s can prompt you to dream big and explore, and we have all the time in the world. Focus on one thing and do well at it instead of trying everything out.Take risks: The notion of “having it all” by 30 is incorrect. Whether it’s about your career, dating, or financial situation, you can still take risks and start over. “All adults are winging it.”Grow and develop: You should continue to improve and grow in your 30s. Some go back to school, some upskill, while some start businesses at 30.Nobody knows what they’re doing: If you think you’re the only one who hasn’t figured it all out, take it easy. As Mark Manson said, “This continues to be true in one’s 30s and, well, forever it seems; and it continues to be good news forever as well.”Invest in your family: Work on your relationships with your family and start thinking about whether you want to create your own family.Be kind to yourself: Nancy, a 60-year-old woman, shared, “Be a little selfish and do something for yourself every day, something different once a month and something spectacular every year.” .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1 { padding:0px; margin: 0; padding-top:1em!important; padding-bottom:1em!important; width:100%; display: block; font-weight:bold; background-color:#eaeaea; border:0!important; border-left:4px solid #2980B9!important; text-decoration:none; } .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1:active, .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; text-decoration:none; } .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1 { transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; } .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1 .ctaText { font-weight:bold; color:#464646; text-decoration:none; font-size: 16px; } .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1 .postTitle { color:#000000; text-decoration: underline!important; font-size: 16px; } .u3e0107d298cdf9cbb172c077097bace1:hover .postTitle { text-decoration: underline!important; } See also Woman shares her "extreme method" of saving up money for the next 1 year

In a startling revelation, cybersecurity firm Human Security has exposed a troubling trend. The firm has identified numerous Android TV boxes, and at least one tablet come pre-infected with malicious Triada-based malware.

This malware poses significant threats, including ad fraud, the creation of counterfeit accounts, and unauthorized access to home networks by surreptitiously funnelling data to servers located in China, as reported by Tom’s Guide.

Android TV boxes infected by malware linked to fraud

Human Security’s latest report has alarmed the tech community as it sheds light on the prevalence of these infected devices. Researchers at the firm have uncovered disturbing evidence that several models of Android TV boxes and one tablet are shipped with perilous firmware backdoors, making them challenging to detect and remove.

The magnitude of the threat is staggering, with at least 74,000 Android mobile phones, tablets, and connected TV boxes worldwide exhibiting signs of infection. What’s even more troubling is the revelation that approximately 200 different Android device models may be affected by this malware, as reported by Wired.

Identified compromised devices

In their investigation, the cybersecurity experts pinpointed eight devices with these malicious backdoors installed from the outset. These devices encompass seven TV boxes, specifically the T95, T95Z, T95MAX, X88, Q9, X12PLUS, and MXQ Pro 5G, along with a tablet identified as J5-W. These devices have a diverse user base, ranging from households to businesses and schools across the United States.

Gavin Reid, Human Security’s Chief Information Security Officer (CISO), emphasized the global reach of this fraudulent operation, stating, “This is a truly distributed way of doing fraud.” Law enforcement agencies have been provided with detailed information regarding the potential origins of these compromised devices.

So, how does this scheme operate? The infected devices are manufactured in China, where, at some point during the commercial supply chain process, a malware-based firmware backdoor is clandestinely integrated. This backdoor is constructed using the notorious Triada malware, which acts as a “downloader” primarily designed to establish a gateway for installing other malicious software. These infections, known as Badbox infections, are intricately linked to a vast network of fraud and cybercrime.

Gavin Reid explained the modus operandi of the malware, saying, “Unbeknownst to the user, when you plug this thing in, it goes to a command and control (C2) in China and downloads an instruction set and starts doing a bunch of bad stuff.”

Fraudulent activities

Once hackers gain access to these compromised devices, they employ them for various types of fraudulent activities, including:

The group orchestrating this scheme reportedly sells access to residential networks on the black market and claims to have control over millions of mobile IP addresses.

Human Security reported that the operators behind BadBox have recently taken down their command-and-control servers, presumably to adapt and evade detection in response to heightened scrutiny. Consumers are strongly advised against using the infected devices, as the malware is deeply embedded in the firmware partition, making it exceptionally challenging to remove without technical expertise.

SINGAPORE: In the wake of personal setbacks exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, one resilient woman has opened up about her extreme methods to save up for next one year, rebuild her life, and secure her financial future. Despite facing a brutal retrenchment during the pandemic without any severance package, she embarked on a journey of self-improvement, determined to turn her life around.

Speaking about her ordeal, she added, “After Covid, I tried to save up but unfotunately I got major illness and almost lost my life. So incurred little tickets of medical bills along the way. I only managed to pay off the bills this month. (Got a bad SME boss who even tried not to pay my salaries for months when I was bedridden).

Despite feeling grateful after recovery, she shared that she feels like she has failed; she explained, “I feel like a major failure. I am so upset, yet at the same time, I am grateful that I am alive (sort of, I am trying my best to recover)… Now I really need to save for housing. My salary is 4000 after CPF, so it is a bit tight.”

Home cook light food like cold pasta, boiled eggs, and veggies to bring to work. This will save a tonne. Cut out BBT and just drink plain water.

Switch all hobbies to overseas online lessons. Probably will only keep my gym card in SG.

No clothes, no makeup, no purchases for the next 1 year.

Defer my Master’s education and certs, and study on Udemy instead.

No overseas trips (actually have been doing this since Covid).

SINGAPORE: A comprehensive national study, spearheaded by researchers from Nanyang Technological University (NTU), has revealed alarming findings regarding the long-term health implications of unvaccinated individuals who have recovered from COVID-19.

Based on the medical records of 106,012 individuals diagnosed with COVID-19 between Sept 1 and Nov 31, 2021, during the Delta variant’s predominance, the study highlights a significant risk of heart complications in such patients almost a year later.

The research, published in the Clinical Infectious Diseases medical journal in September, delves into the aftermath of COVID-19 infection, particularly focusing on the persistence of symptoms and the development of “long Covid” syndrome.

Many of the 912 patients who had recovered from COVID-19 reported lingering health issues. These post-COVID symptoms included persistent fatigue, shortness of breath, memory problems, and, notably, heart complications such as cardiovascular problems, cerebrovascular issues, and thrombosis.

The study took a comparative approach by analyzing the COVID-19 positive group’s health outcomes against a group of nearly 1.7 million individuals from the community who were not known to have been infected with the virus during the same period. Both groups were tracked for an average of 300 days, focusing on the development of ‘long Covid’ syndrome and, more specifically, heart complications.

SINGAPORE: The Housing & Development Board (HDB) announced on Monday (Oct 9) that it has awarded a prime executive condominium site in Tampines Street 62 to a consortium comprising two subsidiaries of Sim Lian Group: Sim Lian Land Pte Ltd and Sim Lian Development Pte Ltd.

This decision follows an intense bidding process that culminated in a successful tender price of S$543,280,000.

The 99-year leasehold site, officially put up for tender on March 14, 2023, garnered significant attention from developers. Nine parties submitted their bids when the tender closed on July 18.

SINGAPORE: A 29-year-old construction worker lost his life following a fatal accident at a worksite at Block 371B, Sembawang Road, on Monday (Oct 9).

According to eyewitness accounts and social media posts, the fatal mishap occurred when the worker was struck by a concrete bucket, causing him to plummet from the eighth floor of the construction site. Disturbing online photos depict the worker lying face up, seemingly unconscious, while several colleagues look on in shock.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a distress call at 3:05 pm and dispatched personnel to the scene. The injured worker was promptly transported to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for medical attention.

Despite the immediate response, the young migrant worker succumbed to his injuries and died at the hospital.

Preliminary investigations conducted by the police have ruled out any foul play. The ongoing investigation is expected to uncover the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This latest tragic incident sheds light on the persisting workplace safety issue in Singapore. The recently released biannual Workplace Safety and Health Report, published by the Ministry of Manpower, disclosed alarming statistics.

In the first half of this year, 14 individuals lost their lives due to work-related injuries, equating to 0.8 deaths per 100,000 employees annually. Although this represents a downtrend compared to previous figures, with 28 workplace fatalities recorded in the first half of 2022 and 18 in the second half, the recent spate of work-related fatalities is concerning.
